Corrosion Coupon Analysis
Pacific Sensor pre-weighs and analyzes corrosion coupons in our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited laboratory. We are proud to help our customers keep people and assets safe by monitoring and preventing corrosion related failures. Pacific Sensor is a trusted partner of the largest pipeline and water treatment companies in the world.
Accuracy of pre and post-exposure coupon weights is critical to evaluating corrosion coupons. As a result Pacific Sensor only uses the highest quality analytical balances in our laboratory. Each balance is calibrated bi-annually and spot checked daily with class 1 calibration weights. Pacific Sensor also completes annual proficiency testing and continuously compares weight data with other labs. As an additional quality check, software is used to verify weights are within expected values based on specimen size and density.
After a typical exposure period of 90 days corrosion coupons are shipped to our facility from around the world. Coupons are cleaned using either an abrasive or chemical cleaning process depending on the customers’ requirements. Coupons are then re-weighed to calculate the weight loss and corrosion rate. The customer will receive an ISO17025 report within 2-5 business days. We pride ourselves in having the shortest lead time in the industry. Additional services include HD photos, magnified photos, pit depth measurements, white label and custom reports.

Per ASTM G1:
Corrosion Rate = (K x W)/(A x T x D)
where:
K = a constant (refer to ASTM G1 8.1.2)
T = time of exposure in hours
A = area, square centimeters
W = mass loss, grams
D = density, grams per cubic centimeter
Per NACE SP0775:
CR = (22270 x W)/(ATD)
where:
CR = average corrosion rate, mils per year (mpy)
W = mass loss, grams (g)
A = initial exposed surface area of coupon, square inches
T = exposure time, days
D = density of coupon metal, grams per cubic centimeter
